Number of Interns – 2 (different internships)
Organisation: Manthan Adhyayan Kendra
Location: Pune, India
Manthan Adhyayan Kendra is a centre set up to research, analyse and monitor water and energy issues from the perspective of just, equitable and sustainable development.
Manthan operates in a semi-formal work environment where the selected interns will get exposure to water and energy related issues in India, studied from the lens of just, equitable and sustainable development. The interns will also get to work with a small team of people coming from diverse backgrounds.
- Internship I: Inland Waterways
The Government of India in April 2016 launched the ambitious National Inland Waterways program that plans to convert 111 rivers or river stretches into large commercial waterways. These waterways represent possibly the largest intervention in and disruption of our rivers, second only to large dams. Manthan has initiated a programme of detailed study of these waterways, their implementation and their impacts. Please see http://www.manthan-india.org/work-theme/inland-waterways/ for our work on waterways.
What we expect
Students enrolled in at least a Masters level degree in disciplines of economics, statistics, environment, and water or a related subject. Students from other disciplines but with passion and commitment to water, environment and developmental issues can also be considered. The work would entail research and financial analysis of inland waterways based on secondary data. The work is analytical and desk based, but there may be a field visit. We are expecting a commitment of at-least two months for this internship.
- Internship II: Development Communication (social media management, design)
Our objective is to increase the reach and effectiveness of Manthan’s work using all media, especially new and social media. In order to achieve this, we hope to work with the intern on the following:
(a) Increase Manthan’s online presence and impact via Facebook, Twitter and Blogs
(b) Design short term and long term strategy for social media platforms
(c) Disseminate key insights from research and analysis in more effective formats
(d) Use Manthan’s existing resource material including articles, photographs and videos more
(e) Align and integrate the social and new media outreach with regular media outreach
What we expect
The intern must be familiar with platforms like Facebook and WordPress. Some experience with designing software such as Photoshop or Illustrator could be useful. Above all, students with an interest in understanding issues surrounding water, environmental justice and development in India will be considered. The role of new media in the context of these issues forms the core of this internship. The work is creative and desk based, but there may be a field visit. A commitment of two months is ideal (flexible).
